Manual or automatic transmission?
-
Here's another preference poll. There might be less agreement here than on rear wheel drive. Which kind of transmission do you prefer to watch or imagine when someone gets stuck? If you enjoy getting stuck yourself, which transmission is your fav for that?
For me, it would always be manual transmission with stick shift. Manual transmission with the gearshift on the steering column would be almost as good, but I don't think these are made anymore. My reasons: (1) they are sturdier; (2) automatic transmission is common only in the U.S., and drivers almost everywhere else in the world laugh at the ineptitude and laziness of Americans for choosing it; (3) a skilled driver can safely shift between forward and reverse more quickly for rocking; and probably most important, (4) there's one more pedal to play with.
If a raconteur among us is looking for ideas, consider a story involving a driver who has experience only with automatic transmission. Then for whatever reason, he is driving a manual-transmission vehicle for the first time, and within a few minutes it gets stuck. Going into some detail over his fumblings with shift and clutch before he can gain enough familiarity to start rocking the car effectively could be an interesting aspect of the tale.
What do you think?

Iām all into automatic when it comes to getting stuck. Unfortunately though I drive a stick

My first 4wd was a 5 speed manual. Both manual and auto have advantages for playing in stuckable dirt.
-
Always manual for me.
-
I actually prefer automatic- but I have an explanation! I am American, and automatic is just what I group up with. I hardly knew any other way, so when I imagined stucks or saw stucks, it was always automatic. It also kind of fits the profile- someone ditsy enough to get themselves stuck is probably not bright enough to buy a manual

Mate, manual good coz it gives you another pedal to pump and bit more of your own control over the revs and amount of spin. Wot ever, its gettin stuck thats the fun bit and while ditsy peps may get stuck accidentally it takes a bit of brain power to get stuck for a good time spin () and gettin fully bogged.

Manual is the best for me. This is better to control by yourself the power of the engine. I also like to change gear when I am spinning in mud.

@Davem1228 said in Manual or automatic transmission?:
Agree with gabe. American and grew up with automatic so 1000% automatic. You can really focus on looking at the tires spinning from the driver's seat, and other things , when you don't have to shift
You can do exactly the same with a manual one if you perfectly know how to use it.
-
Sure can, driving auto isn't driving.
-
I had a manual for years, then I got an automatic. I decided I like to have my hands free while I'm stuck. Also, most trucks now have a higher tow rating with automatic.

Sure thing bud, give me a beat up muddy truck-dont have to worry about dirty boots cakin the pedals and getting a bit dirty inside. Working the gears and the clutch adds to fun of getting bogged.

@spintire you always look nervous when youāre spinning
-
@StuckMonster yes, do you like that?
-
@spintire I really like that!!
