I’m remembering a favorite trip: I drove my truck to a location near the river that I had wanted to explore. I drove my truck to my chosen spot, parked and sat, in the sun but in an area of dense grass that was covering up very deep, black river mud, a remote section of public fields where I’d seen lots of guys get stuck in the past. I got myself into position, and let my big boot stomp down the gas down to the floor. Mud shot everywhere as I pumped that big, tall, sweaty boot up and down and spun my tires. I eased off the gas only so I could grab a quick look at my boots. First I looked at my right foot, my driving foot, inside a big steel-toe logger boot, pedal-pumping the accelerator. Then I examined the left boot. I had managed to cover my Chippewa Super Logger boots with mud up to the topmost collars of both boots. I wonder if I will clean them right away, or keep them heavily caked up with mud for everyone to see.Then I say angrily to myself, to pump myself up over the screaming of the spinning tires and the sounds of spun-up mud landing in the metal bed of the truck, “I’m f——— stuck in the mud!!” I say it over and over. I gave that Silverado’s gas pedal one more grinding stomp. My stuck wheels spun harder and louder. I look down at my muddy logger boots. I notice that I’m seriously smoking my tires now. I move my feet around so I have the best possible view of both boots. I ease off for a moment and slam back on the gas. I am thinking about how my right foot completely covers the surface area of the accelerator pedal and smile. I am grateful for my big man feet. The bigger ggest boots, spinning, recovery, and lots of fun during and afterwards. I get a blowout. I think about my boots and how much more muddy I’m gunna get them later while I change the flat tire that’s stuck in the mud. Spinning a blown tire stuck in the mud is a blast. The whole drivers side is vibrating. I’m f——— stuck in the mud! I pledge that I’m gunna get my boots stuck in the mud - deep- from now on, especially when I have my big black rubber hip boots on.
